Dirty Droids by: Bryan Stoyle

Supplies

  • Acrylic paints (color depend on kind of stain you want)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper towels
  • Water

Before you Begin:

  • Dirtying up droids adds an effect of realism to the Star Wars customs. If you look at the movies, the droids and ships are not top-of-the-line, squeaky clean pieces of machinery. They have stains and marks and "carbon scoring" on them.

  • First think of the kind of stain you want on the droid. This will determine the paints to use. Decide if it will be oil, grease, mud, carbon scoring or whatever kind of stain you're looking for.

Step 1

Rip up the paper towel into little pieces around 2-3" long.

Step 2

Lightly paint the part you want dirty with the paints.

Step 3

Quickly dip one piece of towel into the water and then make it a small ball. rub the paint around, but not completely off of the droid. This will help drive paint into corners and crevices.

Step 4

Repeat Step 3 but this time with a dry piece of paper towel. This helps spread the stain around the flatter parts of the droid to give it a smeared effect.

Step 5

Repeat Steps 2-4 as many times as it take to get the desired effect. For me, it only took one time. There! A dirty droid in 5 minutes!
