Cleaning Brushes (Enamel/Oil-based Paints) by: Jeremy Beckett

Supplies

  • Paint thinner
  • Small glass jar
  • Blu-tack
    (or similar putty)

Before you Begin:

  • It is very important to know how to take care of your brushes, otherwise you'll be spending more money on replacing them.

  • Because acrylic paints have different properties than enamels, this article is broken into two parts.

Step 1

Half-fill the jar with thinner.

Step 2

Swish each brush around for a minute or two and then let them rest in the thinner for 10 minutes.

Step 3

To avoid damaging the point put some Blu-Tack around the inside edge of the jar and stick the handle to the Blu-Tack, with the point 1 cm above the base of the jar.

Step 4

If you have synthetic bristles don't leave them to soak to long or the thinner may damage the bristles.

Step 5

Once they are clean replace the dirty thinner with some fresh thinner and rinse until no paint residue is left in the brush.

Step 6

Allow the brush to air dry for 10 to 15 minutes before using again so that the thinner can evaporate.

Supplies

  • Dish washing liquid
  • Water

Step 1

Rinse the brush under a tap to get all the left over paint out of the brushes.

Step 2

Put a small dab of dish-washing liquid in the palm of your hand and work the bristles gently into the soap, in a circular pattern.

Step 3

When you are satisfied that the tips of the bristles are clean, take some more soap between your thumb and index finger and work the ends of the bristles where they enter the handle. It is very important to keep this area clean so that lumps of dried paint do not accumulate, and destroy the taper of the brush.

Step 4

Rinse all the soap out of the brush, clean the handle off and bring the bristles back to a point.

Step 5

Allow the brush to dry flat - don't stand it up since this could affect the taper of the bristles.
