Jabba the Hutt's Playset by Keith Burgess

Recipe based on Jabba's Palace

Supplies and Tools

  • 5 gallon plastic trash can
  • Lightweight hydrocal
  • Plaster cloth
  • Rock molds
  • 1 sheet of balsa wood
  • Woodland scenics
  • Paints
  • Playground sand
  • Scenic cement
  • Wads of foil
  • Scissors
  • Razor knife
  • Bowl of water
  • Sponge-type paintbrush
Step 1

First off you need to cut one half of the trash can off from the top to the bottom but leave the bottom on the trash can for the ground of the Rancor pit.

Step 2

Cover the entire interior of the trash can with the plaster cloth (you have to cut the plaster cloth into strips and dip it in the water). This will allow you to attach the other plaster parts to your playsets.

Step 3

Next take your wads of foil and place them around the bottom and cover them with plaster cloth. This will give some texture to the floor of the pit.

Step 4

Now take the lightweight hydrocal and make some rocks in the rock molds. While these are drying you need to role up some plaster cloth and attach it about 2/3 of the way towards the top all the way around the trash can. This will allow you to attach the balsa wood shelf (which will become the floor of the throne room above the Rancor pit).

Step 5

Now that your rocks are dry you need to attach them to the walls of the Rancor pit by wetting the walls, then spreading so hydrocal onto the back of the rock and then stick it on the wall. Repeat this step until you have completed the walls of the cave. DON'T FORGET LUKE'S HIDING PLACE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL!!!

Step 6

Now you need to attach the balsa wood floor. First step is to cut the wood to fit on the plaster shelf you made in step 4. Now put it in place and cover it with plaster cloth making sure to extend it onto the back wall. This will keep your shelf from falling off.

Step 7

Next you need to apply your playground sand to both floors. Just pour it into the bottom of the Rancor pit and spray on a lot of scenic cement. This will keep the sand from falling off. Be careful of how much sand you put on the throne room floor, because balsa is a very soft wood. Apply just enough sand to evenly cover the floor and spray it with scenic cement.

Step 8

Once everything is dry you need to lay the trash can down and apply some sand to the back of the throne room walls and again spray on more scenic cement.

Step 9

Now that everything is dry it is time to paint the rancor pit. Just let all the paint run down the walls and onto the floor.  This adds more realism to your project. Lastly you must thoroughly enjoy the work you have just finished. ENJOY!!!!
