  • 5-minute epoxy
    resin
  • Epoxy resin
  • Epoxy resin (paste)
  • Epoxy putty

Epoxies are 2-part compounds that can be used as glues, fillers, or even sculpting and casting compounds. There are many brands of epoxies, with very little difference in quality between most brands. You can find almost any type of epoxy at any hardware or home improvement store for reasonable prices. Most epoxies mix at simple 1:1 ratios, they are very easy to use. Epoxies have a distintive odor, but the smell is much less overwhelming than other resins and solvents. The major disadvantage to epoxies is that they tend to be messy. Below is a list of the major types of epoxy and their customizing uses.

Epoxy resin

Designed to be a quick adhesive, It comes in two tubes or a double syringe and costs $2-$3 for ~25ml. When the two parts are mixed the resin forms a clear goo with the consistency of syrup. True to it's name, it sets very quickly. 5-minute epoxy is great for quickly glueing llarge or small parts, especially if you need to fill a gap. The best use for 5-minute epoxy is as a casting resin. It is ideal for making hollow helmet casts. When cured, the resin (from most brands) is slightly flexible and translucent. *Epoxy Resin is identical to 5-minute epoxy except that it takes from 30 minutes up to several hours to set. It is great for glueing parts that may need tweeking. For example, if you need glue a new foot onto a custom, the resin gives you time to exeriment with various angles so the figure can stand well. For making small, solid casts like head casts epoxy resin is ideal. The slow cure time allows for more bubbles to escape, making more perfect casts. When cured, most brands of the slow-cure epoxy are slightly stronger but slightly less flexible than most 5-minute epoxies.

Epoxy resin (paste)

This comes in a two tubes or a double syringe like other resins, but it is opaque rather than clear. When the two parts are mixed, the resin forms a paste, similar in consistency to warm frosting. It is poor for seeping into deep cracks, but ideal forfilling wider cracks where the clear resins may run. This epoxy is not suitable for pouring into molds. It is very useful for "wet sculpting". The paste can be formed into rough shapes (like horns, bags, large pockets) which can be sanded when cured. When cured, the paste epoxy is very strong but brittle.

Epoxy putty

This is sold as a cylinder of putty wraped in plastic. It can be foud in the plumbing section or adhesive section for under $5 for a small tube. It comes with the two parts one inside of he other. To use, simply cut off a section of the cylinder and knead thoroughly. the mixture has the consistency of clay. Epoxy putty can be molded exactly like polymer clays, except that the putty will cure at room temperature. This has the disadvantage of a limited working time, usually about 20 minutes before it starts to cure. When cured, epoxy putty is very hard. it can be shaved or sanded very easily.
