I've decided to try my hand at shipbuilding with sheet styrene. I figure a Z-95 should be fairly simple to start with, so I'm in the planning stages.
If I build it to scale, then it would be just over 2 feet long, which is a bit much (longer than the current X-wings). So, I've decided to scale it based on the current X-wing mold, which is 18" long (and wide, coincidentally). According to canon, the X-wing is 12.5 m. Based on that, the Z-95 (at 11.8 m) should be just at 17" long.

As for other parts, I'm thinking about cannibalizing a new A-wing for the cockpit (and possibly the canopy too). I want to make the Mark I version with the triple blasters instead of the X-wing style cannons, but I haven't located anything yet that I really like (the new Dagger Sqaudron B-wing cannons are cool, however).

For now, I'm going to draw the design out on Photoshop and work with cardboard (tip from FFURG's site...very smart) until I get the hull just right. Also read a tip about using ABS pipe for an internal skeleton, which I also like. Still reading some other posts and such to gain more wisdom before moving ahead (Delaton's thread is very interesting so far...and part of the inspiration to get started).

Anyone got any other suggestions? I've never tried building a ship from scratch, but I've wanted to for a long time. I'm really looking forward to working on this biggrin.gif !

So, I'm trying to figure out the wing markings on the X-wings from ANH. The first 5 seem simple (Red leader has 1, Wedge has 2, Biggs has 3, Luke has 5). However...what about Reds 6-12? I got to looking at the old Decipher card game, and Red 10 has a clear view of the wing and has 5 short stripes with a long stripe all the way through them. I'm thinking the long stripe must represent "5" and then you add the short stripes (so Reds 11 and 12 would have 2 long stripes and 1 or 2 short ones).

Anyone know anymore about this than I do? I'm planning to make a squadron.

(The pics are a little out of scale as I made them myself in paint in a hurry.)

Red Leader (Red 1, 1 short stripe)

Luke (Red 5, 5 short stripes)

Theron Nett (Red 10, 1 long stripe through 5 short stripes)
Taken from the Decipher Star Wars CCG.

(I posted this on the 'Scum boards too, but I figured this might be the better place to come for info.)

Has anyone found an easy way of just switching the astromech heads on the newer Y-wings? I thought it would be easy with all the Build-A-Droid parts out there, but the heads on the Y-wings have a small lip to lock them into place and the BAD parts don't. Anyone found a good way around that?
